MGM Rewards vs. PENN Play vs. Club Metro: Detroit's Three Casino Loyalty Programs Compared

Detroit has three commercial casinos within a few blocks of each other downtown, and each one hands out a different kind of loyalty card. MGM Grand Detroit runs on MGM Rewards, a program that spans dozens of properties across the country. Hollywood Casino Greektown runs on PENN Play, a program that covers a smaller multi-state chain. MotorCity Casino runs its own program, Club Metro, built for exactly one building. Same city, same three-casino market, three completely different answers to the question of where your points actually work.

MGM Grand Detroit: A National Card Parked in One City

MGM Rewards is the widest-reaching of the three. Sign up at MGM Grand Detroit and the same card tracks play at MGM properties in Las Vegas, National Harbor, Atlantic City's Borgata, and other MGM markets. The tier ladder runs Sapphire, Pearl, Gold, Platinum and Noir. Gold generally starts in the 75,000–199,999 tier-credit range for a program year, Platinum picks up at 200,000, and Noir sits above that as an invitation-only tier MGM doesn't publish a threshold for. A Detroit local who only ever plays downtown gets no extra value from that national footprint — but anyone who travels for work or vacation does, the same trade-off covered in our look at MGM Rewards versus Caesars Rewards in Las Vegas.

MotorCity Casino: Club Metro Doesn't Leave the Building

MotorCity is independently owned, not part of a multi-state casino company, so Club Metro was never built to travel. It runs four tiers — Club Metro, Signature, Signature Club Elite and Signature Premium — and points convert into free play, dining credit, hotel-rate discounts and merchandise, all redeemable on-site. Higher tiers add dining discounts of roughly 10% to 20% at participating restaurants and priority lines during busy hours. There's no sister property to redeem at, no reciprocal status anywhere else, and no reason to expect one. What Club Metro trades away in reach it can make up in how directly value flows back into that one property's floor and restaurants.

Hollywood Casino Greektown: The Middle Ground of PENN Play

Greektown sits between the other two. PENN Entertainment operates it under the Hollywood Casino brand, and its card, PENN Play, works across more than 35 properties nationwide — regional names like L'Auberge and Ameristar, plus other Hollywood-branded casinos and a Las Vegas property. The tier structure runs PLAY as the entry level, an Advantage upgrade tier, then PREMIER, ELITE and OWNERS CLUB at the top, with perks like VIP lounge access, real-time reward redemption and, at the higher tiers, comped stays and cruise packages. It's not as broad as MGM's national network, and it's not confined to one city either — a similar middle position to the one we described in PENN Play's comparison against Hard Rock's Unity program.

Why the Same City Produces Three Different Scopes

The gap between these programs comes down to ownership structure, not marketing. MGM is a large multi-state operator, so its card rides on that footprint. PENN Entertainment owns a smaller but still national portfolio, so PENN Play covers less ground than MGM Rewards but more than a standalone casino ever could. MotorCity answers to no parent chain, so Club Metro was designed for one address and nothing about its tier structure suggests that will change.

Tier Matching Works Differently When Reach Differs

All three casinos will consider matching a comparable tier from an outside program, but what that match is worth depends entirely on reach. Matching into MGM Rewards or PENN Play can unlock value at properties a player hasn't visited yet. Matching into Club Metro only ever pays off at MotorCity itself, since there's no wider network for the match to unlock. Anyone weighing a match offer should ask not just what tier they'd land at, but whether that tier means anything outside the one casino issuing it.

Picking a Card Based on How Often You Travel

A player who never leaves Detroit doesn't lose anything by choosing whichever of the three casinos has the better game selection or comp structure that week — reach is irrelevant if it never gets used. A player who splits time between Detroit and other markets should weight MGM Rewards or PENN Play higher, since points and status earned downtown carry to other cities. None of the three programs turns a losing session into a winning one; all of them just decide where the comps that come out of ordinary play can be spent.
