Penn Play vs. Hard Rock Unity vs. MGM Rewards: Ohio Casino Loyalty Programs Compared

Ohio is one of the newer big casino states, and its players meet three very different loyalty cards depending on the property they walk into. Hollywood Casino in Columbus and Toledo runs Penn Play, Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati uses Hard Rock Unity, and MGM Northfield Park near Cleveland issues MGM Rewards. Each card earns at its own company's properties, and none of them is interchangeable with the others.

Penn Play at Hollywood Casino

Penn Entertainment operates the Hollywood-branded casinos in Ohio, and play there earns Penn Play. It is the same program used at Penn's properties in other states, which we covered in Hard Rock Unity versus Penn Play, so an Ohio player who travels to another Penn casino may find the card recognized there. How much value carries across is set by the company, so check current terms.

Hard Rock Unity in Cincinnati

Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati sits downtown, and its players earn through the Hard Rock Unity program. Unity is a company-wide card, so points built in Ohio can in principle be used at other Hard Rock properties. Treat any quoted redemption value as something to confirm at the players' club desk, because rewards structures differ from one casino to the next and change over time.

MGM Rewards at MGM Northfield Park

MGM Northfield Park, between Cleveland and Akron, is a racino: a harness racing track with a casino floor attached. Its players use MGM Rewards, the same national program we compared against Caesars in MGM Rewards versus Caesars Rewards. The main appeal for a regular is reach: that card is also accepted at MGM resorts in Las Vegas and elsewhere, so status earned in Ohio can matter on a trip.

What These Cards Do and Do Not Change

All three programs work the same way at the basic level. You insert the card, the casino tracks your play, and you earn points or tier credits that convert into free play, dining and hotel offers. None of that changes the odds of a game or the return of a machine. Points are a rebate on action, so see them as a small discount on the cost of playing, never as a reason to play more.

Slots Versus Tables

Slot play usually earns automatically and at a steadier rate, while table credit depends on how the pit rates your average bet and time at the table. The exact formulas are rarely published in full, so ask a host or the desk. The general mechanics are in how tier credits are calculated.

Online and Sports Betting Are Separate

Ohio also licenses online sportsbooks and casino-style apps, and some operators link online accounts to retail cards. Whether that online activity earns anything, and at what rate, is decided by each operator and can change. Confirm it in the current terms, and use only operators licensed in Ohio while you are physically inside the state.

Choosing Based on Where You Live and Travel

A Columbus or Toledo regular will usually build status fastest by concentrating play at one Hollywood property. A Cincinnati local with Hard Rock trips planned has an obvious reason to favor Unity, and a Cleveland-area player who visits Las Vegas may prefer MGM Rewards for its reach. Joining more than one program is normally free, and some casinos will consider matching status from another card, though such offers are discretionary; our guide to status matching explains what they usually ask for.
